BACKGROUND // A common treatment for a patient with an embolism is to to insert a catheter into the femoral artery through a small incision and then remove the obstruction using a vacuum pressure. As you can imagine, this causes issues with pulling too much blood out of the body, especially with larger diameter catheters. Once the surgeon removes ~1000 mL of blood, they have to stop the procedure and start giving the patient blood transfusions.
BRIEF // Based on a concept that they had, our client asked us to investigate, characterize, and develop a device to prevent blood loss during thrombectomy procedures.
