While at Stanford’s Design Impact Master’s program, I served an appointment in the Product Realization lab for 3 years from 2019-2022. During this time, I assisted in teaching the following courses:
ME102 - Foundations of Product Realization
ME103/203 - Product Realization: Design and Making
ME128/318 - Computer Aided Design
ME 325 - Injection Molding
Below are the unedited teaching evaluations that I have access to. I have also requested the remaining evaluations from Frances Yang (who is currently out of office but will collect them when she returns).
Fall 2019
As a coach:
I think he did a great job making a very welcoming environment, and allowing us to find the best way to represent ourselves with our projects.Very encouraging and approachable. Felt comfortable working with him.
As someone they've worked closely with:
Jack is a super great CA. While I only worked with him in the PRL, he was great at giving advice about scope, materials, and overall project functionality.
Jack was very helpful and gave great suggestions for our project.
He did great.
He was really helpful and supportive.
Jack was very understanding and patient. Always kept a positive attitude and seemed genuinely invested in students projects. Always asked for updates on mine from the prototype phase till the very end, which is something small that could've easily gone unnoticed, but I really appreciated.

Jack was so helpful every time he was around (even when he was off duty!). He showed me how to use the plunge router and literally stayed with me the whole time and made sure I knew what was going on. It was sweet of him to be so encouraging and supportive during that because the machine is a bit intimidating. Also even when he was off duty, he helped me in the foundry when I was casting, and was always just very enthusiastic to help. Thank you Jack!!!
Jack was great and super knowledgeable in the shop which I really appreciated. Not only would he tell me how to do something, it often was the best way to do something (I went down a couple rabbit holes of doing things very inefficiently and he quickly corrected it). I also appreciate how he was clearly excited and enjoyed manufacturing, which made getting through the more frustrating bits of the project more bearable and pushed me to do things until it met my standards.
Jack was super nice and helpful in the PRL. He was very approachable and was always happy to help you with your problem - whether it's a physical problem/question with the machines or something more conceptual like an op sequence.
Spring 2020
Jack was really helpful in giving feedback during coaching sessions. Really welcoming and personable, easy to talk to, made learning space comfortable/safe. It was a bit hard to contact/communicate with them outside of class.
Class instruction was very useful and always felt comfortable asking questions and getting help. It could have been more organized but the scheduling of homework’s and material was moving around and I don’t think that was avoidable.

How useful is coaching for your learning experience? 5 | 5
What does your coach do well to support your learning experience?
Jack was able to provide insight on technical aspects of projects with regards to CAD and the CAM. Also through some emotional and financial stress and was able to connect me with Craig where I was able to communicate my situation and work out a plan for the course. Jack provided more than enough support and continued to check in with me throughout the quarter to ensure that I was doing okay. Jack also provided a lot of insight with regards to a professional and academic careers that allowed me to refocus on my academics when I was struck with fear paralysis.
Besides being very helpful with technical support, Jack has been supportive in our general well-being. Every week during coaching, he opens up our session by asking about how our weeks have been going outside of school, inside of school but outside of this class, and in this class. He always brings a smile into the session despite the energy of us students :) He's also super responsive to any emails I send asking for advice outside of his coaching session hours..
How could your coach better support your learning experience?
I think Jack was awesome there were a couple of questions we had pertaining to the course and some assignments specifically and he would have a little trouble providing further clarification but he always followed up with Craig and let us know the answers quickly.
I think at the beginning of the quarter, it was a little harder to get a hold of Jack, but that's been remedied now!
Fall 2022
I came in during many of Jack’s shifts in Room 36 and he was very supportive throughout the different stages of my projects.
Jack’s enthusiasm and encouragement made a huge difference in my ME 103 experience. When I was unconfident about my projects, Jack’s positivity and belief that everything will work out reduced my stress greatly. Jack made sure he was super available to help whenever we needed help and was very responsive on slack and email. Jack’s expertise in many manufacturing techniques helped students consider all possible ways to construct their products.
I have had the opportunity to work with Jack throughout this quarter. He was a great coach on my personal project. He is very welcoming, is passionate about our projects, and knows how to leave constructive feedback! I am also very grateful toward his many design ideas towards my project, so thank you!! It had been a pleasure working with you
Super supportive, wish the times I could Go into the PRL overlapped with Jack’s on duty times because he’s super helpful.
I really enjoyed collaborating with Jack. He always gave me great feedback and advice and was very encouraging.
This CA was exceptionally patient and passionate with his provision of feedback for my work. He was available during office hours, and off the clock. I wish that we had a closer meet up spot to my next class (bc we always showed up late) but beyond that. No critical feedback for Jack.
Jack has guided me throughout the entirety of the course and helped my project stay in the right trajectory the whole time. He has not only been very willing to help but also gave very helpful feedback and ideas when I ran into challenges during my design process. Jack also creates a very welcoming and comforting ambience during coaching meetings, so it has been a joy to go to the coaching meetings every week.
Very helpful!
Thanks for always finding a way to make us smile
Jack is the man!
Winter 2022
Jack was a great coach. He was extremely supportive and so knowledgeable and always willing to help.
Jack was a supportive mentor in the PRL. He always believed in my success and brainstormed means to problem-solve my failures/weaknesses. He was always very available whenever I would need help or sought advice. Sometimes, I would send a message at 10 PM whenever I would have a question, and even when I wouldn't expect a response from him, he would always respond promptly with really supportive and constructive advice. One thing was that sometimes, I feel like he believed a little TOO much in my successes, as he would think that I could produce work that might have been above my capacity at a given time, and so I would feel some form of (self-imposed) pressure to deliver. However, he has been instrumental to my success in this class with brainstorming ways to finish my product by the deadline, and I am so grateful.
Jack has been an amazing coach this quarter. I loved all the feedback I’ve received from him, and it feels like he truly cares about our projects and our success. A thorn about coaching meetings is that when he’s not talking about your project, it’s sometimes difficult to stay on track with what the other students are saying and so I just get lost or bored, but I’m not sure if there’s a way to go around that issue.
Jack is an incredible teacher and mentor! He always looks on the bright side of things and helps students go through with their initial plans (with help if they need to be readjusted). He makes coaching a warm, welcoming, and fun environment. This quarter was particularly overwhelming due to covid and countless other factors (on top of the class just being difficult), and Jack made it so much less stressful. Perhaps one of the most caring CAs I’ve ever had at Stanford (or really anywhere)!
He was very helpful and involved with the students he worked with.
Jack was very accommodating throughout the quarter with regards to helping with deadlines. He also had lots of suggestions for how we might create our projects. Also he was just generally very friendly around the PRL and would always say hi to the students! We played soccer in the courtyard once.
Jack was very helpful and available whenever I had questions for him. He had a bunch of really good suggestions that really helped me refine my design and enhanced my project.
There were two separate times where I needed to work on a project in Room 36 and although it was supposed to be open at 8:30 AM, Jack was not there to open it until closer to 9 AM. I understand that it is early, but we as students are all busy and trying to work the PRL schedule into our own, so it was frustrating when I was unable to complete parts of my project because he did not arrive at his shift on time.
Any time I asked for help I felt like you really cared about the whole picture and took on some of the weight of ensuring the project’s success (with other CAs, I felt they just wanted to answer my question in isolation and move on). I really appreciated your light energy and we-got-this attitude - it helped some moments that could have been frustrating or disheartening for me be energizing instead. Also trusted your intuition most of all the CAs. Thanks for being so wonderful!
It would be great if you would stay another quarter/year
This is the coolest man in the PRL. He is extremely efficient in queueing up people and brings an insane amount of energy and effort.
