OBJECTIVE // As part of the Design MMoCA event at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, we were given a 12′ by 12′ space to create an experience based on a piece we selected from their archives. With the theme ‘Dream Up’ for the event, our concept revolved around an extrapolation of current trends in technology and the ever increasing ability for people to customize and gain control of their environment. We had an array of different products, each of which had a co-branding with another product as well as our artificial “HacMe Corporation”. Working with Chris Harris, we constructed a laser cut, electroluminescent display inspired by circuit boards and the circulatory system, in which the center module changed color based on the speed of the pulsing light.

TECHNICAL // I used an Arduino with an EL Wire shield to control the lighting. The body was designed in Solidworks and Adobe Illustrator and then laser cut out of red and white acrylic. The wire was laid into the gaps in the acrylic and then covered with a clear layer. The heart module had a translucent film covering it with an LED in back. As the pulse of the display increased, the color of the LED changed from Blue to Red.

COLLABORATION // Chris Harris of Design Concepts collaborated on the layout of the EL Wire and was responsible for the construction of the laser cut cage that protected the electronics and the heart module construction.
