BACKGROUND // Eleven years ago, I purchased my first 1975 Volkswagen Bus with romanticized dreams peace, love and the open road. Ten years later and a litany of heartbreaking breakdowns later, I purchased my second. Now in the time of #vanlife, the appeal of living on the road has hit Kerouac highs, but my desire to build a home and have my own backyard starts to grow. In a moment of COVID fueled, pent up frustration, I decided I can have it all. I can have my garden and take it on the road.

OBJECTIVE // Build a completely self contained mobile garden that can be taken with me on road trips.

INGREDIENTS //

...............(1) 1975 Volkwagen Westfalia (1.8L AT)

...............(2) Various Succulents

...............(3) Various Vegetables (Currently Lettuce & Parsley)

...............(4) Various Flowers

...............(5) Potting Soil

...............(6) Acrylic Panels

DETAILS // The garden bed is only a couple inches deep and lined with plastic sheeting. It has holes in each of the corners to ensure that excess water can drain and a plastic shield to help protect it while Iā€™m driving. I plan to evolve the protection to a more complete enclosure and make it more of a greenhouse for the long run. Though I can currently use the sink in the bus to water the plants, my objective is to utilize the solar panels and a microcontroller to build a more robust, self-regulated irrigation system.
