‘Believe Me’ Show

Installed on November 15, 2013, the piece was on display in the Mosse Humanities Building on the UW Madison campus.  Here is the artist’s statement that accompanied it:

“As a mechanical engineer and artist, I believe that both science and art are an exploration and search for understanding of ourselves and the world in which we live. As a subsect of this, I am continuously interested in the way technology distorts the lens in which we view the human experience. The Hangbot is a hanging vertical plotter that controls the motion of a stylus with two stepper motors handing from a wall. Using some algorithms, the device takes and image converts it into one continuous line segment, and then outputs a series of commands to the motors to render the image on the wall. Though each line is drawn precisely and accurately, the end result displays how the sterility of technology skews the way in which we perceive the actions and emotions of others.”
